Dr Heather McLaughlin Junior Warden

Heather has recently been appointed Director of the Business School at Canterbury Christ Church University. She is consultant and active researcher with expertise in international business, finance, and maritime economics and logistics where she has long been involved in policy development. She has acted as Specialist Adviser to the 'House of Commons Select Committee for Transport' and has worked on numerous European Commission projects in the logistics and maritime field.

A graduate of Lancaster University with a BA (Hons) in Economics, she went on to qualify as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse Coopers in London. She then joined IBM Head Office as a Financial Analyst. Heather joined academia in 1992, gaining an MSc in Business Finance from Brunel, and a PhD in Currency Risk at London Guildhall whilst lecturing in accounting and finance.

She was Director of the 'Centre for International Transport Management' at London Metropolitan University from 2003 before becoming Head of Consultancy for the 'Global Policy Research Institute' in 2008. During that time she also established and was Director of the government funded agency 'Sea and Water'.

During her academic career, she has successfully supervised a number of doctoral students and acted as external examiner for PhD and masters programmes. She is currently Editor-in-Chief of the leading academic maritime journal 'Maritime Policy and Management' and retains a close affiliation with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University where she is overseas academic adviser to the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies.
